ABOUT THE MUSEUM

The BTM Castle Museum is located in the E wing of the former royal palace on Buda hill.
Visitors can explore the restored rooms of the medieval palace, the former castle chapel, and the Gothic hall, moreover One can see the museum's unique treasures: the Hungarian-Anjou silk carpet, the Gothic sculptures that are of exceptional artistic value, as well as the marble carvings of the famous King Matthias' palace. In addition to the history of the palace, the Castle Museum's exhibitions also showcase the most important events and personalities in the history of Budapest. How did the glorious seat of the medieval Kingdom of Hungary come to be, and how was it destroyed during the Turkish wars and sieges? How did Pest, Buda and Óbuda unite creating Budapest one of the fastest growing metropolises in Central Europe at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries? How did the Second World War destroy the peacetime metropolis and how was the Greater Budapest formed? All these questions can be answered at the Castle Museum of the Budapest History Museum.

MISSION OF THE BTM CASTLE MUSEUM
The Castle Museum, located in the former Royal Palace of Buda, the seat of the Budapest History Museum, collects and preserves the archaeological and historical relics of the capital from the conquest of the Hungarian Empire to the end of the Turkish era. As one of the scientific centers of medieval and early modern research in Hungary, its primary task is to research, protect and present the archaeological, historical, and artistic heritage of the period, and to carry out archaeological excavations in Budapest.
Its aim is to make the medieval and early modern monuments available to all interested parties in an authentic way, taking into account the latest research findings and professional ethical aspects, and to actively participate in the protection of cultural heritage and the shaping of the future of Budapest. The institution attaches importance to cooperation with local history collections in the district.
The special mission of the Castle Museum is to research the history of the Royal Palace of Buda, a key tourist site, and to present the surviving monuments of the former royal seat to a high standard. The museum's central role means that it not only houses permanent exhibitions from the Middle Ages and the early modern period but also offers a comprehensive urban history exhibition, presenting the results of a wide range of disciplines from prehistory to the present day in an accessible format, as well as temporary exhibitions of history and art.
